It’s always a treat when a touring band is excited to be a part of VDub Sessions.
Especially one as busy and exciting as San Antonio-based band Girl in a Coma. The band is performing opening duties at Cain’s Ballroom Oct. 30 for Minus the Bear and Cursive.
That’s just a footnote in the GIAC’s tour history. The girls have opened for Sia, Tegan and Sara, The Pogues, Amanda Palmer and even Morrissey himself.
But that doesn’t stop GIAC from being down to earth.
Last month the trio performed a headlining gig at The Conservatory. Singer Nina Diaz gladly shot off some fireworks behind The Conservatory and hopped into the Spy Van to perform a track off of her band’s latest album “Exits & All the Rest.”

M. Paul Kirby says he’s no good at interviews.
We are glad to prove the Stillwater-based artist wrong.
When we met him last month he spoke eloquently about the power of art and his feathery bird creations.
Take a minute to learn up about the talent that makes Oklahoma unique.
Also, if you haven’t dropped by the Plaza District on the second Friday of every month then you’re not only missing a bevy of free and fun entertainment but also you’re missing the chance to see the Spy Van in action.

We won’t bite. Too hard.
Our van doesn’t break down often, but when it does then it does it in style.
Right as Chelsey Cope and company started her Spy Van performance, our fearless driver Ferris O’Brien let out an audible groan as the van halted in the middle of the road.
“Hang on,” he said.
But with a quick push, the van settled in a post office parking lot and the festivities began.
Cope invited her friends Alex Coleman and Alberto Roubert to fill the spaces of her heartfelt rendition of “Journey Down St. Vincent.”

You know that old expression about how the company you keep determines the trouble you meet?
I could only imagine what sort of trouble Edmond-native singer/songwriter Audra Mae could get into.
Her enthusiastic Spy Van performance of “My Friend the Devil” might give you a pretty good idea of Mae’s meddlesome ways.
Or you can look at her fingernails. Her thumb was painted with her symbol, an anarchistic A for Audra.
We’ve been fans Mae since her impromptu session at Norman Music Festival two years ago.
Both songs she has performed in the Spy Van are from her excellent self-titled album Audra Mae and the Almighty Sound.
Please don’t hold us responsible for all the trouble you get into after giving it a listen, but at least we can promise it will be worth it.

We wouldn’t be surprised if Colin Nance dreams in zeros and ones.
Nance is a mainstay in the Okie electronic band The Gentle Art of Floating and his recent solo projects are like a one-man band M83.
So, it didn’t come as a surprise when Nance hopped into the Spy Van with an iPad and a boombox in tow.
The combination of cassette tape and his friend Pilar Pueyo made for one of the most inventive sessions we’ve had to date.

Phillip Danner is an artist with a knack for texture.
Little did we know that he wanted to create textures inside the Spy Van with office tape, spray paint and even fire. The only thing hotter than the cruel July sun was Danner’s art as he took one of his older pieces and transformed it into something new. This doesn’t come as a big surprise because the artists working at The Society are quite the creative whizzes.
It has been a couple months since we’ve had an Okie artist jump into the van for an Artist Interview Session, but we hope this episode starts another wave of sessions at Live on the Plaza. If you’re unfamiliar with Live on the Plaza then please check into the free art and culture explosion that takes place every second Friday of the month.

It’s unfair to call JD McPherson a blast from the past.
He’s more of a force to be reckoned with in the present.
Exhibit A: The Broken Arrow schoolteacher turned rockabilly frontman has been steadily building enthusiasm for his debut album “Signs and Signifiers” for about two years. The album is phenomenal and has enough rock to fill the Grand Canyon.
We discovered that first hand in the van when McPherson broke into a Morrissey cover and a Ike Turner cover after giving a blistering performance of “Signs and Signifiers” closing track “Scandalous.”
It comes as no surprise McPherson is set to perform as the Wednesday night musical guest on Conan this week. Good thing we caught him before a concert at VZD’s because he’s going to be pretty hard to pin down with as he tours throughout the U.S. this summer.
Who else thinks this guy has a bright future in store?

John Fullbright pushes music to a new level.
Seriously, Fullbright helped push the VDub Sessions van when it broke down before his session last week.
We were blown away from his generosity when he not only helped with the van but also belted out this amazing track from his new album.
Fullbright said nothing surprises him at this point.
That’s funny coming from a musician full of surprises.
The Okemah native recently landed an interview on NPR’s Weekend Edition and a feature on Paste’s website.
Not to mention this impressive write-up from the LA Times.
Fullbright’s about to embark on a tour across the country. You better catch this Okie before he’s too folkin’ famous for his own good.
