It’s unfair to call JD McPherson a blast from the past.

He’s more of a force to be reckoned with in the present.

Exhibit A: The Broken Arrow schoolteacher turned rockabilly frontman has been steadily building enthusiasm for his debut album “Signs and Signifiers” for about two years. The album is phenomenal and has enough rock to fill the Grand Canyon.

NPR recently caught up with McPherson to discuss his vintage recording methods and his eclectic music taste.

We discovered that first hand in the van when McPherson broke into a Morrissey cover and a Ike Turner cover after giving a blistering performance of “Signs and Signifiers” closing track “Scandalous.”

It comes as no surprise McPherson is set to perform as the Wednesday night musical guest on Conan this week. Good thing we caught him before a concert at VZD’s because he’s going to be pretty hard to pin down with as he tours throughout the U.S. this summer.

Who else thinks this guy has a bright future in store?

Episode 53 – John Fullbright (5/3/2012)

John Fullbright pushes music to a new level.

Seriously, Fullbright helped push the VDub Sessions van when it broke down before his session last week.

We were blown away from his generosity when he not only helped with the van but also belted out this amazing track from his new album.

Fullbright said nothing surprises him at this point.

That’s funny coming from a musician full of surprises.

The Okemah native recently landed an interview on NPR’s Weekend Edition and a feature on Paste’s website.

Not to mention this impressive write-up from the LA Times.

Fullbright’s about to embark on a tour across the country. You better catch this Okie before he’s too folkin’ famous for his own good.

Episode 51 – John Paul Keith (4/6/2012)

You know that saying, “They don’t make ’em like they use to.”

Well, it’s time you meet John Paul Keith.

One part Buddy Holly and the rest parts catchy as hell.

That’s the best way to describe the rockabilly songs coming from Memphis-based artist.

The good people of Okie Dope records invited Keith to perform at VZD’s, and he was kind enough to share a song from his latest album.

Enjoy this blast from the past because they do make ’em like they used to.

Episode 48 – The Polyphonic Spree (2/7/2012)

We wouldn’t be surprised if The Polyphonic Spree has never heard the expression “too much of a good thing.”

The band’s current line-up sports nearly two dozen members and we fit a dozen of the Dallas-based crew inside of the van for a joyful rendition of “It’s the Sun.”

This is some of the most fun we’ve had with a band in the van.

We hope the joyful nature of this episode is contagious much like the Spree’s energetic, life-affirming concerts.

Episode 45 – Zac Cox (12/9/2011)

Flaming Lips roadie and OKC artist Zac Cox hopped into the van for the last session of 2011.

We enjoy Zac’s construction paper concoctions and his chocolate milk mustache.

New Episode Preview: Green Corn Revival

New Episode Previews: Tim Krause and Ali Harter

Howdy VDubbers, the Spy Van was more than busy this week.

A new artist advanture with The Society artist Tim Krause was filmed at Live on the Plaza on Friday.

Early Saturday morning, our filming crew saddled up for a Cowtown VDub Session in the historic Stockyard City with Ali Harter (an Okie famous around the world). She performed a new song that is uniquely Ali.

That’s precisely why we think OK Sweetheart deserves attention.

Erin Austin isn’t living in Tulsa anymore, but she still plays in Oklahoma under the moniker OK Sweetheart during her active tour schedule and makes sweet ’60s-inspired pop songs sound as easy as Sunday morning.

If you are in Norman this week and have the means then we highly suggest you visit OK Sweetheart and Brine Webb performing at The Opolis.

It can be a lot of work getting to a show, but you should know OK Sweetheart will make it easy on you.
